INFORMATION: The Daniel O'Connell Cottage is a 150 years old stone vacation/holiday self-catering cottage situated on the most majestic section of the "Ring of Kerry", in a magnificent setting, perched conveniently above the panoramic scene of green valleys and the blue waters of the Bay of Kenmare. These wonderful surroundings are complemented by the romantic setting of the cottage. Nostalgia abounds with "Victorian Period" furnishings tastefully blended in to contemporary, colour and contrast. The stone buildings and Irish fireplaces set the scene for a "romantic holiday hideaway", far away from the maddening crowd. Oozing charm - no expense has been spared to make your holiday a special one, right down to the "Goose feather" duvets and Laura Ashley linen. But most of all is the rural nature of the 4 acres setting, with views from Derreenauliffe Lodge where the 180 degree panorama expose both mountain and sea. You need but open the door to the most majestic scenery on the entire "Ring of Kerry".

The Michael Collins Cottage has its own private garden and bubbling brook outside the front door. This cottage is more spacious and no expense has been spared to furnish it to the highest standards. It hosts a variety of bird life in its mini forest. You may well bump into the resident hare colony, meandering along the fairy pathways. The interior is in the traditional Irish farm style of the early 1900's when Michael Collins made his mark in the annals of Irish folk lore. The decor a blend of selected modern and antique furnishings whilst sleeping on new 5 star beds, guaranteeing peaceful and sound sleep on your dream holiday.

THE COTTAGES: Derreenauliffe Lodge Self-catering Cottages cater for the discerning guest, one wishing to fulfill a dream and who has assembled picture perceptions of that special time and place in Ireland. Our task is to simply manage the props, the stage is one of natural beauty and the romance of Ireland does the rest.

FACILITIES: The water supply is spring sourced with a modern purification plant ensuring absolute standards of purity.

LAUNDRY: This self-catering service is available on site to save you the hassle.

THINGS TO DO AT Derreenauliffe Lodge WHILST ON SELF-CATERING VACATION: For those energetic folk, hiking over the mountain, starting from behind the estate and linking up with the "Kerry Way" walks, is very special. Rural serenity abounds although the cottage is only 15 minutes drive from the town of Sneem where there is a choice of six busy little pubs that serve up fine fare.

Just 15 minutes walk from Derreenauliffe Lodge, down the quiet boreen is the Kinlough Causeway, ideal for fishing and swimming. Alternatively visit the tiny Gleesk Pier to picnic. You may want to consider a boat ride to the Skellig Islands to see the 12th century monastery. Caherdaniel and Derrynane beaches are a must!

Bird life at Derreenauliffe Lodge is prolific and with the cottages' local bird watchers' guide, provides many an hour of interesting discovery of the feathered kind. From the cuckoo's arrival at the outset of spring through to the final migration of the swallow, leaves memories of a summer shared with umpteen species from red breasted robin, chaffinch and pheasant. Disturb the ground and close friendships are made with the song thrush seeking tempting morsels at arm's length. Derreenauliffe Lodge provides sanctuary for the hare feeding on the new and sweet grasses.

The entertainment and barbecue area ... The barbecue area ... what a view!

GOLF: For the golf enthusiast there is a 12 hole course at Parknasilla, only 20 minutes drive away, where clubs can be hired. Golf is also available at the Ring of Kerry Golf Course in Kenmare and the famous Waterville Links used by Tiger Woods, Mark O'Meara and the late Payne Stewart, prior to the British Open at St Andrews.

SNEEM: SNEEM is the most colourful and picturesque village in Ireland with rainbow coloured shops and villagers of matching warmth and colour. The name means "knot or twist" and describes the shape of an hourglass with a single car bridge being the knot and with two greens at each end.

The village provides all the amenities to shop for provisions, Quills Irish linen and 6 pubs serving up fine fare if you choose not to cook. The village is 15 minutes drive from Derreenauliffe Lodge. The most scenically beautiful part of the 179km, RING OF KERRY, starts at SNEEM and extends 25kms to WATERVILLE. Whilst the remaining part is pretty, it lacks the awesome beauty of this section.

The sun goes down in the winter around 16h30 and in the summer 22h30 and you can arrive at Derreenauliffe Lodge at your own convenience. In at 15h00 and out by 10h00. The Blind Piper pub at Caherdaniel/Derrynane stays open late.

HELP: If help is needed to plan your holidays please ask and we will assist wherever possible. Whilst enjoying your stay at Derreenauliffe Lodge we can pre-arrange any activities you may wish to pursue such as golf, cycle hire, river or sea fishing in season for Irish salmon, boat trips, horse riding at Derrynane/Caherdaniel or hiking, etc.. You need only ask.
